Along the Boardwalk

Good Afternoon,
I hope everyone has started to settle into school year routines and earlier bedtimes. I know my late-night Netflix binge watching is officially over, I have been asleep by 9:00 most nights!

It was wonderful seeing so many students and families at Back to School Night last week. Watching students proudly show you their classrooms and our building or simply having you spend time in their space was such a special experience. They were excited to share what they do each day and introduce you to the people with whom they spend their time.

I also hope you had an opportunity to see the student identity work displayed throughout our classrooms. We have spent a great deal of time getting to know one another, building connections, and exploring important questions: How are we alike? How are we different? What can we learn from one another?

Boardwalk Lower School Council
It is also time to establish the Boardwalk Lower School Council. School Councils are advisory groups composed of staff, parents, and community members. The Council advises the principal on important school topics and helps develop the School Improvement Plan.

Meetings will be held virtually from 7:45–8:30 a.m. on the following dates:
  • October 29
  • November 19
  • January 21
  • March 18
  • May 6
I am looking for three parents or caregivers who are interested in serving on the Council. Members will be selected through an election by the Boardwalk Lower community.

If you are interested, please email me at awarren@abschools.org by October 1 with a short biography that tells the community a little about you and why you would like to serve. The election will be included in the next edition of Along the Boardwalk.

We have officially completed our first full week of school! It has been wonderful having everyone here, but I think we are all feeling a little tired. I hope you enjoy the three-day weekend. To those in our community observing Yom Kippur, I wish you a meaningful fast.

Kindly,
Allison

Drop Off and Pick Up on Spruce Street

As we are all still acclimating to the new routines, I wanted to send out a reminder about Spruce Street.  If the drop off/pick up line has extended off of the school grounds and you are lining up on Spruce street, please be mindful not to block the driveways of the residents. Thank you for your understanding.

Dismissal - Pick Up on Spruce Street - Trying Something New...

To help reduce traffic congestion on Spruce Street we are going to try a new pickup option.

Beginning at 3:00 p.m., families may park in the school parking lot and walk to the sidewalk pickup area to meet their student. This may be a helpful option if you need extra time to safely assist your student into the car.

Please check in with a staff member before leaving with your student. We will monitor how this new option works and make adjustments if needed. Thank you for your patience and cooperation as we work to make dismissal more efficient.

Reading and Math Specialist Information

You have all received the Acton-Boxborough MTSS letter, which explains how we support all students in our schools. We wanted to share a little more information about the work our Math and Reading specialists are beginning this fall.

Our Math and Reading specialists have begun screening and assessing students. Over the next few weeks, they may invite your student to work with them outside of the classroom during the FLEX block. This gives the specialists an opportunity to get to know your student and learn more about their individual skills and needs.

As part of this process, specialists may also work with small groups of students to provide a “jump start” review of specific skills.

Following the fall benchmark assessments, the Math and Reading specialists will reach out to you if your student will be participating in ongoing intervention support.

Thank you for your continued partnership and support in your student’s education!

Thank you-
Reading and Math Specialist
